Brewing news Germany: Bernard Gielen to be technical director of Carlsberg Deutschland effective 01/09/06

Graduate master brewer Bernard Gielen (57), plant manager of Lubz brewery in Mecklenburg, will be technical director of Carlsberg Deutschland on 1 September 2006. He will succeed Eric Juul Rasmussen, who will undertake new tasks as Supply Chain Director at Carlsberg Denmark, Holsten Group, member of Carlsberg Deutschland, recently released.

Bernard Gielen will be responsible for the entire technical area of Carlsberg Deutschland Group. In his new position, he will report to executive chairman of Holsten-Brauerei AG, Wolfgang Burgard, and to Kasper Madsen, Senior Vice President Group Supply Chain of Carlsberg A/S in Copenhagen.

After a number of technical managerial position in Wuppertaler and in breweries in Cologne, Bernard Gielen moved to Hamburg in 1992, initially as factory manager with Steinike & Weinlig and later with Bavaria-St. Pauli-Brauerei. Since February 2000, he has been in charge of technology in Lübz.

A management successor for Lubz has not yet been appointed.

Carlsberg Deutschland is one of the leading breweries in northern and eastern Germany with a production volume of 7.0 million hectolitres (hl) of beer in 2005. Since April 2004 the Holsten Group of breweries became part of Carlsberg Deutschland, thus making the Carlsberg corporation the world’s fifth largest brewery group.

Carlsberg Deutschland includes the Mecklenburg brewery in Lubz, the Feldschlosschen breweries in Dresden and Brunswick and the Carlsberg Vertriebsgesellschaft West in Krefeld. In 2005 the Group achieved total beer sales in the order of 5.2 million hl in Germany, plus another 1.8 million hl that were either exported or sold as licensed beer.

Since January 2005 Carlsberg Deutschland also includes the Gottsche-Getrenke Group which unites the drinks wholesalers in northern and eastern Germany.
